How do school choice and enrolment work?

For grade 1, the Burgas municipality allocates places through an electronic system based on catchment areas and points: the leading criterion is how close the school is to the child's registered address, families living in the catchment area for more than three years get the highest score, and siblings bring extra points. Admission to grade 8 is based on the national NVO exams in Bulgarian and mathematics plus two grade-7 report marks; places are assigned by total score and ranked preferences over several admission rounds.
