What does running a car cost — and how expensive is fuel in Bulgaria?

Fuel is noticeably cheaper than the EU average: petrol and diesel run about 10 to 13 percent below the EU mean (Bulgaria is among the four cheapest EU countries). Autogas (LPG) is by far the cheapest — Bulgaria leads the EU for autogas with over 3,000 stations. Running costs are low: the annual vehicle tax goes to the municipality and depends on engine power, age and emissions class (Burgas uses per-kilowatt bands).
