Which emergency number applies in Bulgaria?
The EU-wide emergency number 112 applies across Bulgaria. The call is free, even from a mobile phone without credit, and the control centre works around the clock. It automatically connects the caller to an operator who speaks their language. If none is free, the call is passed on to another centre. For buyers and owners on the south coast, this means 112 belongs in the phone before anything happens. Note that Bulgaria has no rotating pharmacy emergency service as in Germany. The coastal towns have permanently open 24-hour pharmacies (Bulgarian: denonoshtna apteka). It makes sense to write down the address of the nearest emergency department (Bulgarian: speshno otdelenie) in your own town and to keep the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or Bulgarian proof of insurance at hand.
