Can I pop into Turkey for a day trip or shopping?
Yes — thanks to its proximity to Turkey, the Burgas region is an ideal base for cross-border trips: shopping and sightseeing combine easily in a single day. Kırklareli with the Minimall shopping centre is about 130 kilometres via the Malko Tarnovo–Dereköy crossing, a good two hours plus border formalities. Edirne with the large Margi Outlet is about 2.5 hours via Lesovo–Hamzabeyli. Both crossings are open around the clock; Lesovo–Hamzabeyli is used by heavy trucks, so waits are possible. Without your own car there are buses (Malko Tarnovo–Burgas several times a day) or a taxi. Important for non-EU citizens: the 90/180-day rule works on a rolling 180-day window. A quick border hop does not give you a fresh 90 days — but time spent outside Schengen, for example in nearby Turkey, lets older Schengen days drop out of the window and frees up allowance again. That is exactly why many owners from the UK, the US or Canada deliberately plan stays in Turkey. EU citizens are not subject to the 90/180 rule anyway. More in the residence guide and link directory.
