Is Bulgaria worthwhile for pensioners with a small pension or a tight budget?

No — and we say this very plainly. Bulgaria is not a welfare state like Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Scandinavia or the Benelux countries; the social safety net is rudimentary, and nobody catches you here if things go wrong. The days of cheap Bulgaria are over: the economy and inflation grow considerably faster than in Central Europe, property prices and living costs rise year after year, and flights home keep getting more expensive. Bulgaria makes sense for investors and for people who want to save taxes and enjoy the climate — with an appropriate budget. Anyone considering relocation out of financial hardship is better off staying within their home country's social system. And an explicit warning: compatriots promising a „pensioners' paradise“ with supposedly cheap living are making a business out of other people's hardship — usually without any trade registration or company in Bulgaria, to top up their own budget.
