How big are the regional differences in Bulgaria?

Considerable — Bulgaria is two countries in one. Sofia and the tourism-developed coastal zones have caught up strongly over the past twenty years; roads, retail and services there reach a level reminiscent of Spain's coasts in earlier decades. The north and north-west of the country, by contrast, are sparsely populated and structurally weak, with a correspondingly wide gap in infrastructure and prices — at times whole worlds lie between the regions, including in price per square metre.
