Questions and answers · Places on the southern coast
How is the southern coast connected compared with the north?
On the road the south has a clear, lasting advantage. The Trakia motorway (A1) has connected Burgas directly with Plovdiv and Sofia since 2013, around 360 kilometres of finished motorway. The north, by contrast, is still waiting: the Hemus motorway to Varna remains piecemeal, not due for completion until late 2029 or early 2030 under official plans, with gaps drivers bypass on ordinary roads. Anyone driving from the south to Sofia airport or into the mountains stays on continuous motorway. Burgas airport, however, is strongly seasonal, and winter scheduled connections are thin. The finished Trakia motorway offsets that, since the Sofia hub with year-round flights is within easy reach. In the summer peak season Burgas flies many destinations directly anyway.
