How venomous is the scolopendra, the region's centipede?

The Mediterranean centipede is the most conspicuous centipede in the region. It is nocturnal, lives under stones and wood, and avoids people. Its bite burns and swells, and it is not dangerous to healthy adults; if the skin reacts strongly you see a doctor, just as you would at home. Only someone who picks the animal up or steps on it gets bitten. The species is recorded in Austria too. Anyone lifting firewood or stones wears gloves, and that is the entire precaution.
