What should I check when buying a house without a sewer connection?
Ask to be shown where the wastewater actually goes. What is permitted is a collection pit, not a soakaway that discharges into the ground. Ask about the volume of the pit, the receipts for the last emptyings and how often it was emptied. Check whether a tanker can reach the plot: a narrow lane makes every collection dearer. If there is already a sewer in the street, connection is mandatory, so the connection cost belongs in your purchase budget.
