How does Bulgarian inheritance law work — and what differs from Germany?
Under Bulgaria's Inheritance Act (ZN) children inherit in equal shares; alongside children the surviving spouse receives a share equal to one child's. Without children the spouse takes half alongside parents or siblings (two thirds if the marriage lasted over ten years), and everything if there are no other relatives. There is a compulsory share (zapazena chast): one half with one child, two thirds with two or more children; the freely disposable part shrinks accordingly. The key difference from Germany: there the spouse inherits a flat share (usually half alongside children under the accrued-gains regime), whereas Bulgaria divides more by family heads — the spouse gets the same share as each child. Under EU Succession Regulation 650/2012 the law of your habitual residence generally applies, but you may choose your home-country law. For the specifics, involve a notary or specialist lawyer.
