Tsarevo, known as Michurin until 1991, sits at the far south-eastern edge of the Burgas region. The town occupies a small peninsula with its own harbour, about 60 kilometres south-east of Burgas along the E-87 trunk road. Its registered population stands at 5,417. Fishing and shipbuilding shaped the place for generations, and you still feel that today: Tsarevo is far quieter than Sunny Beach or Nessebar further north. A large share of the municipal territory falls within Strandzha Nature Park, the largest in Bulgaria. Several beaches lie right by the town, and at the height of summer the water warms to around 25 degrees.
